Generative Engine Optimization for Design Studios
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your website easy for AI search tools—ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews—to find, understand, and cite. You'll also hear it called answer engine optimization (AEO), AI search optimization, or LLM SEO. For an interior design studio or landscaping company, GEO isn't a separate trick. It's solid SEO plus a few technical details that decide whether AI tools can read your site at all.
This guide explains how AI search finds websites, what actually matters, what doesn't, and how WEB & WORTH builds sites for both Google and AI search.
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO means preparing your content so AI systems that generate answers can use it as a source. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, which described it as a way to help content creators improve their visibility in generative engine responses.
Classic SEO aims for a spot in a list of links. GEO aims for your business to be mentioned or linked inside an AI-written answer—for example, when someone asks, "Who designs modern kitchens in my area?" or "What should a landscape design include?"
GEO SEO vs. traditional SEO
They overlap heavily. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema or AI text files are needed. Standard SEO best practices apply, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
The differences show up with tools outside Google. They use their own crawlers, and those crawlers have their own rules and limits.
How AI search tools find your website
ChatGPT
OpenAI runs several crawlers with different jobs, according to its bot documentation:
- OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. Sites that block it won't appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- GPTBot collects content for model training.
- ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user's request calls for it.
You can block training with GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot, so your site can appear in search answers.
Claude
Anthropic also separates its crawlers, per its help center: Claude-SearchBot indexes for search, Claude-User fetches pages for users, and ClaudeBot collects training data. Anthropic says its bots respect robots.txt. Claude's web search has also been reported to use Brave Search, based on Anthropic's subprocessor list.
Perplexity
Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results, and it recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want your site to appear there. Perplexity-User fetches pages when a person asks a question.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
These draw on Google Search's index. If your pages are indexed and eligible for a snippet, they're eligible—no special setup required.
Microsoft Copilot
Bing Webmaster Tools now includes an AI Performance report, in public preview, that shows when your site is cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers. It's worth setting up Bing Webmaster Tools for that reason alone.
What matters for answer engine optimization
1. Let the right crawlers in
Check your robots.txt. If it blocks OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, or PerplexityBot, those tools can't use your site in search answers. Firewall, security, or platform settings can block bots too, so check rather than assume.
2. Put key content in the HTML
A Vercel analysis from December 2024 found that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot don't execute JavaScript. If your services, project descriptions, or contact details only appear after JavaScript runs, those crawlers may see an empty page. Critical content should be server-rendered—present in the page's HTML from the start.
3. Lead with the answer
AI tools quote passages they can lift cleanly. Start each section with a direct answer, then add detail. "We design residential gardens and patios in [area]" is easier to cite than three paragraphs of mood before the facts.
4. Say who you are, what you do, and where
State your services, your service area, and your specialty in plain words. Design studio websites often rely on photos and leave this unsaid. An AI tool can't recommend a "landscape designer in [town]" if your site never says you're one.
5. Use clear structure
One H1 per page, descriptive H2s and H3s, short paragraphs, and lists where they help. Good structure makes content easier to extract, for search engines and AI tools alike.
6. Keep standard SEO in place
Unique titles and descriptions, a mobile-friendly site, indexed pages, consistent business details. Since Google says standard SEO applies to its AI features, this is the foundation. See SEO for landscapers and SEO for interior designers for specifics.
What doesn't matter (yet)
llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed file meant to guide AI models through a site. So far, no major AI company has committed to reading it, and studies have found no measurable effect on citations. It's harmless, but it's not a priority.
Special "AI schema" or AI-only content
Google says you don't need special schema or AI text files for its AI features. Be skeptical of anyone selling a secret format.
Guarantees
No one controls what an AI tool says. Any promise of guaranteed ChatGPT placement or a top spot in AI answers isn't credible. For a practical walkthrough, read how to get cited by ChatGPT.
How WEB & WORTH builds for AI search
We build websites for interior design studios and landscape design companies, and every site is built for both Google search and AI search. GEO is part of the build, not an add-on:
- A site structure with clear pages for services, projects, and service area
- Copy written from your answers that leads with direct, quotable statements about what you do—you check the facts and approve
- Essential SEO: titles, descriptions, headings, and clean structure
- Key content in the page HTML, so AI crawlers can read it
- A mobile version
The process is mostly in writing—you review, comment, and approve on your own schedule, with no calls required. Websites start at $1,000. The final price depends on the number of pages and features, and we set scope, timeline, payment schedule, and revision rounds in a proposal before work starts.
